"New-Method" No. 55

We introduce the email bulletin "New-Method" No. 55 with our works and guest contributions. This issue features Maru Takada for the contributor, an artist who edited and contributed to "Kaiga Kentoukai [Painting Reviewing Session] 2016- Archives, Analyses, and First Remarks," published in March, 2017.

Self Talk
Maru Takada (Artist)

Characters:
A creates something "just simply," and B is an artist.
A makes painting, and B talks about it.
A intuitively knows what is possible, and B considers whether something is possible or not.
C is an ordinary person.

A: I don't feel comfortable here...

B: Want to go home?

A: No, I wouldn't...

C: Ok, then let's get started.  To begin with, tell me what you guys usually do.

B: I make pictures and erase them by manipulating groups of brushstrokes, and, let's say, make titles to explicitly show their duration (how long the medium may last).

C: Why would you do that?

B: Demonstrating a picture means gathering it ephemerally. It gets together temporarily to represent something, out of which the spectator will acquire certain consciousness.  And it turns to ruin itself.

C: You organized an exhibition in July last year, which was called Kaiga Kentoukai [Painting Reviewing Session] 2016.  What was the exhibition like?

B: I organized the exhibition while participating as an artist myself.  Including myself, five artists exhibited own works and exchanged ideas through meetings and talks before and during the exhibition period.  You can find archives for details...

C: What was the exhibition concept?

B: I represented the group in the following statement to announce the exhibition.  "We do not intend to form a group.  I talked to people who explore what is called painting by actually 'painting' it.  Please enjoy how each individual artist demonstrates what they practice as painting," that's all.  As a whole, we regard all actions taken for the exhibitions as relevant processes, so that we constantly demonstrated the processes as they are.  After the exhibition, as planned, the five artists went back to own practices without making any conclusion.

C: Does it make sense?

A: Haha! It doesn't sound like art for you?

C: What?

B: I sign "O" on my works, taken after my name Maru [which means "circle" in Japanese].  This is a stamp for approval.

C: What are you saying?

B: My "O" is a seal of approval.

C: Well, let's say we have talked so much for today.  Let's get out of here.  It's getting warm although hay fever is getting harder.

A&B: Yes.

ABC: ACHOO!
